Currently I am the editor and publisher of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine and the owner of FGM Records, a record label dedicated to the pomotion of acoustic guitar music. I also manage Brad Davis, one of the most talented musicians and songwriters in the music business. Additionally, I play bass with Brad during select dates. I grew up in Springfield, Virginia, and graduated from Annandale High School in 1978. I attended college at the United States Naval Academy, earning a bachelor of science in Mathematics. Upon graduation in 1982 I was commisioned a 2ndLt in the United States Marine Corps. I served as an officer in the Marine Corps from 1982 through 1992, leaving the service at the rank of Captain. While in the service I attended the Naval Postgraduate School and earned a Master degree in Electrical Engineering.
Upon leaving the service I started my own publishing business, High View Publications. In addition to publishing a magazine on Chinese martial arts, called the Pa Kua Chang Journal, I published books and produced instructional videos on the Chinese martial arts of Xing Yi Quan (Hsing Yi Chuan) and Ba Gua Zhang (Pa Kua Chang).
In 1996 I started publishing Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, which is now been in publication for over 10 years. This magazine the number one resource for acoustic guitar players who play in the flatpick style. A few years after I started publishing the magazine, I also started a record label called FGM Records. I also started a business called Flatpicking Mercantile, which produces instructional material for guitar.
I have two daughters, Emily (10) and Sara (9). My girlfriend Judy and I have known each other all of our lives, having grown up just a few houses away from each other in Virginia. We dated in high school and college, but then lost track of each other for 22 years before reuniting a few years ago.
