About The Muse

The Muse: A Girl’s Delicious Daydream About a Dangerous Man is a twisted Pygmalian tale of a love darkened by obsession. Fashioned in the stylized aesthetic of the early silent films, and shot entirely on black and white Super 8 film, the story portrays a young man who enters a flower shop to catch the eye of a beautiful shopgirl. They begin to dance, and he, enamored, begins to adorn her with flowers from around the store. She is at first charmed by his flattery, but soon realizes that she has inspired a creation that has taken on a life of its own. She cannot walk for the fabric he has swathed her in, nor move from the headpieces he has arranged around her hair. His attention reaches obsession when he produces an axe and cuts off his own finger to carve it into a small flute, with which he serenades her. As she sadly watches him dissolve into his own creation, she slowly exits the picture, leaving him to his invented fantasy of her. It is only then that we realize the entire scenario has been her daydream; it was she who invented a dark portrait of him, and not the other way around. This haunting film plays with concepts of how lovers invent each other, often to dark ends. It is a unique silent film, mysterious, moving, and beautiful to watch.
