FROM THE VAULT
w/ host Justin Goldberg
this weeks show: "Indie Icons"

28:01 duration, 25.6 MB

right click to "save as"

Hey everyone, welcome to the first installment of Indie911's "From the Vault". On this program we delve into the Indie911 archives to play you some great recordings that we have come across in the last few years.

First up, our founder, Justin Goldberg talks about Indie911 and our mission: to help promote independent artists and help them fend for themselves in the music business. Justin is a fifteen year veteran of the music biz, and he has a wealth of knowledge to impart to aspiring musicians. Be sure to check out his acclaimed book "The Ultimate Survival Guide To The New Music Industry: A Handbook For Hell", available at major bookstores, or at the indie911 store!

Following Justin's intro, we bring you perhaps the greatest example of an independent artist who has succeeded on his own, making his music and running his career his own way: the legendary Martin Sexton. Starting out as a street musician at a subway station in Harvard Square, Sexton recorded his first album, "In The Journey", for $800. Since then, that album has sold over 40,000 copies. Reaping more revenue from his solo touring operation and independently released records than most artists on major labels with a dozen gold albums, Martin Sexton stands respectively alongside other indie phenoms such as Ani DiFranco. Listen to the track "Hallelujah" from a performance at Irving Plaza in New York City, Dec '03.

As the frontman of the band Candlebox, Kevin Martin sold over 5 million records. The group catapulted him to the top of the modern-rock radio charts in the the '90's. Martin has since moved on to create his own indie record label, Tympanic Records, and front his own project: Kevin Martin & The HiWatts. Released on Tympanic Records, the band's debut album, 2002's "The Possibility of Being", features 11 tracks all or which are co-written and arranged by Martin. Here is the second track off of that album, "If I Could".

Willie Nelson is an artist who defies all boundaries of the music business. Nelson's sense of accessability and small town generosity of spirit belie the fact that he has sold over 32 million records and released over 100 albums. A guitar god and a lyrical master, Nelson has been on the road playing to his dedicated fans for the better part of 40 years now. Past 70 years old, Nelson still draws huge audiences, and still releases albums. His latest record, "Countryman" was released this past month. Justin Goldberg caught up with Willie Nelson during a telephone call prior to his performace at the 2003 South By Southwest Festival in Austin, TX. The two discuss the state of the music industry, as well as Willie's storied career.

Hope you enjoy the show, and keep an eye out for more great independent music only at Indie911.com!

Featuring music from:

Martin Sexton

Kevin Martin &

The HiWatts

Willie Nelson

Show Summary:
  • Justin talks about the changing music industry...
  • "Hallelujah" - Martin Sexton, live in NYC, Dec. 2003
  • "If I Could" - Kevin Martin & The HiWatts
  • Interview with Willie Nelson from the 2003 SXSW festival

INDIE-CENT XPOSURE
w/ hosts Justin Goldberg and "The Dolls"
this weeks show: "American Roadtrip"

27:35 duration, 25 MB

right click to "save as"

Hey y'all, thanks for checking out another episode of Indie911's IndieCent Exposure Radio. This week's playlist of some of the greatest music you've never heard features some songs you gots to have with you on an "American Roadtrip". These tracks will make you want to hop in your convertible and hit the road this weekend. Justin Goldberg is joined once again in the studio by "The Dolls", Ashley and Carly, who talk a little bit about their favorite road trips and give their thoughts on roadtrip music.

Paul Brill out of NYC calls his music "electricana", and he certainly couldn't have come up with a better fake word to describe his music. Combining elements of rock, electronica, and rootsy americana, Brill creates a refreshing and unique sound that sets him apart.

Bret Reilly combines the depth and sincerity of songwriters like Elliot Smith and David Grey with music that is brilliantly textured by the support of a full band and is lyrically inspiring. Bret has been featured on the soundtrack for several feature films including "Me, Myself, and Irene" and "There's Something About Mary."

Walkie Talkie's earthy sound and vibe fits the Americana genre like a well worn glove. Featuring band members Jim and Dani Lacey-Baker, the band has long been a college radio favorite.

You might remember Stewboss from a previous podcast of ours, but they fit this road trip theme so well we had to feature them again. Often compared to some of the great American roots rock stars like Tom Petty and John Mellencamp, Stewboss just plain rocks.

Brian Seymour is one of those great songwriters that you can grow to love after just one spin of one of his numerous records. Brian has also had success in licensing his songs, most notably scoring a high five figure deal for use of his song "I Go Happy" in a TV ad for the Pennsylvania Board of Tourism.

Scott Tournet is currently on tour handling the lead guitar for Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. His solo album is full of rocking, filthy blues guitar, occasionally breaking out one of his wailing slide solos.

So put the top down, start the engine, and hook up your iPod for exactly 27 minutes and 35 seconds of awesome independent music and amusing conversation from Justin and "The Dolls". Enjoy the show, and check back next Wednesday for another indie911 podcast!

Featuring music from:

Paul Brill

Brett Reilly

Walkie Talkie

Brian Seymour

Stewboss

Scott Tournet

this weeks show: Guilty Pleasures
featuring Cock Lorge, Folk Uke, and Tally Hall
30:44 duration, 28.1 MB

Well, we promised new shows, and here we are with our first
non-"Heads and Tales" podcast! Our "Indie-Cent Xposure" podcast series will include shows featuring a particular musical theme, such as this week's "Guilty Pleasures" theme. Host Justin Goldberg is joined by his new twin co-hosts Carly and Ashley, otherwise known as "The Dolls", as they hang out in the studio listening to great new indie911 music.

This weeks show features some of the most hilarious music indie911 has to offer,
including artists Cock Lorge, Folk Uke, and Tally Hall.

New York City anthemist Cock Lorge brings his straight talk right at you with fresh rhythms and memorable melodies. Blender Magazine calls "Cock In the Pussy" one of the top 100 songs of 2004. A pornographic Neil Young with heart and hilarity, Cock Lorge is easily one of the most unique artists on indie911.

Folk Uke is a band featuring singers Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson, daughters of American folk legends Woody Guthrie and Willie Nelson. Ukuleles, harmonious guitars, and raw and inappropriate/appropriate lyrics are the product of these Tennessee performers who have just released their long awaited self titled album with eight tunes.

What can we say about Tally Hall? Their music is ingeniously crafted, infectuously catchy, and often hilarious. Tally Hall was recently recognized as one of the top 2 college bands in the U.S., and band member Andrew Horowitz was even awarded the grand prize in BMI's 2004 John Lennon Songwriting Competition. Look for the band to release their debut album "Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum" later this year!

Enjoy the show, and check back next Wednesday for another indie911 podcast!

HEADS AND TALES
w/ host Justin Goldberg - Show #07
this weeks guests:
Casey McPherson and Anne McCue

53:28 duration, 48.9 MB

right click to "save as"

On this week's episode of Heads and Tales, we have two extremely talented musicians in the studio with Justin: Anne McCue, and Casey McPherson, former lead singer of the band Endochine.

Anne McCue hails from Sydney, Australia, and has been touring across he world for the last two years. McCue's music mixes straight up rock 'n' roll with a hint of blues and country. You just don't find singer/songwriters
like McCue very often, with incredible melodies, a unique, haunting voice, and impeccable guitar skill. After touring with legends such as Heart and Lucinda Williams, who calls McCue "my favorite new artist...and an amazing guitarist", McCue has built a strong fan base across the U.S. as well as the rest of the world. She has also had success licensing her music for use on websites for both Abercrombie and Fitch and Budweiser, and has had her music featured on Lucinda William's Artist's Choice compilation CD, in the esteemed company of John Coltrane, Leonard Cohen, Patty Griffin, Paul Westerberg, and Ryan Adams.

Casey McPherson is a songwriter out of Austin, Texas, who previously fronted the band Endochine.
McPherson's vocals and songwriting were a key factor in creating the band's unique sound. McPherson draws on vocal influences such as the late Jeff Buckley, Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, and Radiohead's Thom Yorke. McPherson is currently touring as a solo artist.

Enjoy the show, and check back next Wednesday for another episode of Heads and Tales!

HEADS AND TALES
w/ host Justin Goldberg - Show #06
this weeks guests:
Stewboss and Walkie Talkie

56:47 duration, 51.9 MB

right click to "save as"

Hope everyone grilled some burgers, watched some fireworks, and had a great 4th of July weekend! Thanks for checking out the Indie911 Podcast Channel for another episode of the Heads and Tales Program. We have two of our favorite independent artists in our studio this week: Gregg Sarfaty of Stewboss, and Dani Francis and Jim Lacey-Baker of Walkie Talkie.
Few independent artists have attained the kinds of milestones that Stewboss have achieved in their short career together. The band has released five acclaimed albums, toured Europe five times in as many years, and had their music featured in several major feature films. The band's raw rock 'n' roll sound has drawn comparisons to Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and John Mellencamp.
Walkie Talkie has long been an underground sensation, charting on college radio stations across the country and working with producers of bands such as the Rolling Stones, Bad Religion, and Neil Young.
