About Mason Reed

Mason Reed -- Gone Gypsy
Interviewed by T.M. Cade

Mason Reed was born at the base of the Rocky Mountains to a Swedish/English father and a Hungarian/Irish mother. His life changed dramatically in 1988 when his mother and father divorced and his mother moved him and his sister to Phoenix , Arizona . The relocation to Arizona meant a fresh start for the family. Mason's "gone gypsy" philosophy gave birth there and "began breathing at that point," he notes. So what is Going Gypsy? "Well, my mother had a big part in it. I learned from her that if you don‘t like something about your life, you have the power to walk away and invent a new life. You can walk away and invent a new world and new rules. You don't let the past weigh you down. It‘s about shedding skin and looking forward. It‘s as if we, as a world, keep our nose buried in our past then we can never look forward to a brighter future" says Mason. And as the lyrics read, "It matters what you do, it don't matter what you've done." Family is the most important concept to Mason whether your immediate family or the world family he adores. "I draw strengths from all sides of my family. I received musical talent from my father, I was given the gift of words from my mother and my sister is continually supporting me unconditionally and now I can also embrace the world family."

After moving from coast to coast and at one point playing guitar in the New York City subway to pay the rent, he still considers Phoenix his home " all my true friends, the ones you never lose no matter what, they are all from Phoenix," yet he finds the California coast his sustenance "Orange County is the only place I have ever moved back to." He sums it up by relating, "I have a little mountain, a little desert and a lot of ocean."

This talented young singer/songwriter is so serious about his music he considers it his religion and his lyrics smack of poetry from a published work. Yet, instead of publishing his words as a book of verse, he wraps them with his music and sings to the heart the way of many modern troubadours from Bruce Springsteen to Bono. As one young fan remarked, "Ooooooh, his songs give me chills." And yes, you do get chills with the sultry lyrics of "The Whole Orchestra" that sing The first time I tasted red wine on your lips/Yeah it hurt but I was thirsty for more/The first time my hands graced the strings cross your hips/I swear I could hear the whole orchestra" or the sensual "Strange Love" that speaks of first encounters "Enough with generalities/So much for formalities/ I want to see and smell and taste and touch everyone of your personalities." As you hear him sing, you feel there is always a back-story and many women left behind. When queried about past romances, Mason just smiles mysteriously and says "Sure. Lots. It's all in the songs, you'll just have to hear the new CD."

The CD, titled "Witches & Whiskey" is currently being produced by Ronnie King
(who seems always on the cutting edge of a new sound) and should be finished in late August. Ronnie‘s resume includes work with Tupac Shakur, The Offspring and Mariah Carey. "Yeah, very exciting times. Ronnie King is a genius and it is a pleasure to learn from him." Says Mason, "Six weeks ago I was in Denver , Colorado . I gave everything away, grabbed my guitar and a duffel bag and decided to go gypsy and invent my own life." Again to quote the lyrics he lives "Mama don't miss me/I've got something to say/I've gone gypsy and I'm running away."

Mason has discovered a new sound and a new way with the lyric. As you watch him dance with his guitar, pulling her close and pushing her away, you are sure there is something fresh and magical happening in the world of music and this world's gypsy is giving everything in his heart to his audience. He feels there is a second renaissance dawning where "art is going to flourish as well as science" and he would "like people to figure out how to trust each other once again. No one trusts anyone anymore." It appears that he is going to bridge that gap of trust by a new sound spoken from the wildest place on earth to conquer, the human heart.
