About Marla Sokoloff
Marla Sokoloff wants to rock. Sure, the Practice star has a steady gig on a popular series and clocks appearances in piqant teen comedies like Sugar & Spice and Whatever It Takes. but what young siren ever let something like a burgeoning career get in the way of her True Calling? Sokoloff wants to sing.
She is that rare multiple-front threat: a young singer-songwriter with attitude capable of navigating the ups and downs of twin careers. "I didn't come to LA to be an actress," Sokoloff says defiantly.
Unable to land a recording deal as a pre-teen, she instead got roles on the TV shows Full House and Party of Five and in the films The Babysitter's Club and True Crime. Then, in 1998 Sokoloff beat out future Academy Award winner Hilary Swank for the coveted role of sassy Lucy Hatcher on The Practice.
These days she fronts the rock quartet Smittin, writing all the lyrics and arrangements with an eye toward a decidedly non-bubblegum effect. "People get very surprised because the songs are angry and always honest," Sokoloff says. "And why shouldn't I be? Just because I'm on TV?"
