NEW ALBUM SOUL VARIATIONS-- PRESALES NOW!
KCRW Presents AM at the Hotel Cafe June 22, 2007
Award Winning Artist AM's CD Release Party
'Soul Variations'
35th Song Placement from AM's Debut "Troubled Times"
"AM has the type of voice that's so clear and expressive, it's a wonder that his lyrics don't overpower the subtly crafted music behind them. Craftsmanship is really the key here, as the artist balances haste with passion, creating music that's altogether emotionally charged yet surefooted and simple. It's a purely American folk-pop kind of of concoction, tough and sensitive, tasteful and inventive, channeling a softer Jeff Buckley or a stripped-down, entirely unpretentious Wilco."- John Meyer, WERS Boston
(Los Angeles, CA) Fans of AM can get an early taste of the exceptional songs from his sophomore album 'Soul Variations' at his Los Angeles CD release party at the Hotel Café on Friday, June 22nd at 9pm presented by KCRW. Tastemakers like Nic Harcourt on KCRW have already begun spinning this record and AM recently performed his new song “Old Song” live on Joe Esclante’s Morning Radio Show on Indie 103fm. U.S. summer tour dates will stretch from June until the end of August and are TBA.
ALL 10 songs from AM’s debut album “Troubled Times” were placed in film and television shows (35 song placements to date!) including HBO's “Big Love”, ABC’s “Men In Trees”, MTV's “Real World,” and ABC's “What About Brian”. “Troubled Times” is currently available nationwide in indie record stores, Best Buy, and Borders books and was included on many critics, radio station, and blogger "Best of" lists including iTunes top 20 “Best Singer/Songwriter Albums of the Year”. On June 20th, you can hear AM's song "Home" from his debut on MTV's "Reunited: The Real World Las Vegas" at 10:00pm pst.
AM is currently scoring the indie film “Main Maid” starring indie rock icon John Doe. AM was featured on iTunes as the “Indie Artist Spotlight,” of the week, and as a MySpace.com featured artist. AM has also received accolades from publications such as Performing Songwriter, Music Connection, and he won the coveted “Best Singer/Songwriter of the Year” award at the LA Weekly Music Awards. AM is supported by Gibson Guitars and represented for touring by The Agency Group. As mentioned in the front page article of the Wall Street Journal last week, AM is impossible to Google but can be found at www.myspace.com/amsounds and www.amsounds.com.
AM will tour North America extensively this summer.

AM’s songs have been embraced by the most critical and influential ears in Los Angeles, garnering attention with LA Weekly’s award for the BEST SINGER/ SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR. His songs are regularly played on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” radio program and the internationally syndicated radio show “Sounds Eclectic”. His songs have also been heard on T.V. shows such as ABC’s “Life as we know it”, several season’s of MTV’s “Real World” (including “Real World Philly “ and “Real World Austin”) and on the upcoming Tom Hanks HBO production “Big Love.” AM’s live radio performance on KCRW’s hit morning show “Morning Becomes Eclectic” is a favorite Internet podcast download. Hailing from New Orleans and now Los Angeles based, AM brings a new twist to pop music following in the footsteps of less obvious pop icons such as Beck, Wilco and The Flaming Lips. Understated pop gems seem effortlessly crafted by this young emerging songwriter. Check out AM’s beleagued blues on the lovely ballad "Running Away", his addictive tracks like the Weezer-esque "City Syndrome", and his mesmerizing Beck-like vocals in the unforgettable “Losing You”. Above all it’s AM's uncanny ability for writing perfect acoustic-pop hooks and his soothing voice that really sell this wonderful debut record. From Americana to folk-rock, AM’s songs weave multiple variations of the pop medium with the richness of southern sounds. AM began his musical development surrounded by rock-n-roll but heavily influenced by the indigenous sounds of New Orleans which included country, bluegrass and roots music. Born in Oklahoma and raised in Mandeville, Louisiana, a rural town outside of New Orleans, he grew up playing guitar and listening to Motown, Fleetwood Mac, and the Eagles. Discontent with the provincial nature of the New Orleans music scene, AM moved to Los Angeles where he held a weekly residency at the infamous Hotel Café then hosted by musical artist Gary Jules (“Madworld” Universal Music).
WERS SAYS:
AM has the type of voice that's so clear and expressive, it's a wonder that his lyrics don't overpower the subtly crafted music behind them. Craftsmanship is really the key here, as the artist balances haste with passion, creating music that's altogether emotionally charged yet surefooted and simple. It's a purely American folk-pop kind of of concoction, tough and sensitive, tasteful and inventive, channeling a softer Jeff Buckley or a stripped-down, entirely unpretentious Wilco.
Equally classic is the story that brought AM to where he is today. Small-town background (Tulsa, OK) led to a guitar-in-hand musical calling and relocation to Los Angeles. He played South by Southwest (is there any amazing artist nowadays that wasn't discovered there?) and caught the attention of Defend Music. The label re-released AM's first record (Troubled Times) to great reviews and now, those searing good looks, soft hooks, and passionate subtleties are back with Soul Variations. The album presents a personal and universal sense of heartache and triumph (reportedly inspired by the effects of Hurricane Katrina) as only AM's sophisticatedly brooding voice can convey.
The result is like taking a little Jeff Buckley-brand sweetener in your Bob Dylan-brewed cup of black coffee. A bittersweet start to what will hopefully turn out to be a beautiful day. If you're ever feeling low in the AM (it was unavoidable), you'll now know what to listen to.
