About Where Silence Is Music
To talk of the role of silence in the realm of music is bound to sound paradoxical. What can music which means creation, vibration,movement, growth, derive from such a silence?
According to Indian philosophy, silence is conceived as the most positive sublime entity,holding and envoloping within itself a whole world of infinite musical possibilities.In relation to music, silence can be envisaged as a vast expanse of a blue black firmament whereon a master artist creates beautiful, shining patterns with dots,stripes and curves of lightening, having various dimensions, intensities and luminosities in terms of sound.
Silence is the integral substance which provides a canvas or the matrix for sound to materialise.
A musical event to materialise itself needs temporal space, a duration,segregated as it were, out of the temporal infinity. Within a musical structure itself, silence claims its vitally important share in the form of pauses and punctuations.By its vary nature, property of absolute continuity is denied to sound.
Silence is like a veritable life-force for the very existence of music and is of supreme importance to the art of music.
Silence, inborn as well as cultivated in a musically creative mind can be the only substance capable of bringing forth and holding an artistic structure.It is indeed the poise, control and imagination, in the handling of silence in a musical creation that ditermines to a considerable extent, its claim to gratness or otherwise.
